Valentine's DaySchool didn't start for another hour, so Dark offered to take Rose on a walk. They strolled through the streets and down to the park by the river. As they walked, Dark noticed a boy carrying flowers, and he realized that this was the third one he had seen today.
"What's up with all the flowers?" he asked.
"Flowers?"
Dark gestured at the boy. "Yeah, a bunch of people got flowers."
"Oh." Rose laughed. "It's Valentine's Day. Today a lot of guys give flowers to girls. Friends sometimes give each other flowers too—at least, you see it all the time at school."
"Oh." Dark paused. "Does anyone ever give you flowers?"
Rose laughed. "Oh, no! I don't have a boyfriend, and none of my friends at school would buy me any. They don't know me very well."
"That must stink."
"No, I'm not the only one who doesn't get flowers," she said with a shrug. Her gaze turned to an old couple walking down by the river. They were holding hands.

He hated working this late, especially on the day after Christmas, when he was supposed to be spending time with Sean. But the emergency had brought him in early and kept him in late, and he had no control over that. He just hoped that Sean wouldn't be too upset.
Leo locked his car and walked to the front door. He paused for a moment to rub his eyes. He should have gotten more sleep last night. The movie with Sean had gone too late, and then the phone call had woken him up early... He sighed for a moment, trying to regain his energy and composure. He was tired, but he didn't want to be grumpy. Sean had probably missed him. Leo unlocked the door and pulled it open.
"Holy—!" He jumped back and nearly fell off the front step. "SEAN! What is that?"

...and look what happens.

This is drawn from one of my potential senior photos. My dad took it in the backyard (as it's much cheaper and more convenient that way). My mom did the makeup.

The facial features are not exact, but they're about as close as I could get them.

I probably look too old.

For your amusement, I found some older self-portraits (drawn with mirrors)...
This one was drawn a few months after I joined deviantART.
This one is from when I was 13.

Any tips for someone switching from anime to realism (much like that)?

Here are some things I've learned over time. You may already know them, but I'll just tell you as much as I can. You might want to sit back and get comfortable. It's going to be long.

Drawing what you see (from a photo or real life) is one of the most important skills you can learn. It will allow you to draw absolutely anything, like... detailed inanimate objects. (My friend drew it and I'm sure she wouldn't mind if I showed you.) It's a hard skill to master, but once you've done it, you can draw absolutely anything!
—>While tracing isn't an ideal method for creating finished pictures, digitally tracing an image, discarding the tracing, and then trying to draw from the image can really help, especially when you're having difficulty drawing a certain spot.

The best way to learn anatomy or make a good pose is by referring to a photo for reference. I usually see a marked increase in the quality of my artwork whenever I do that. =Fyuvix has at least one good tutorial on that.
I worked closely from a photo for this picture. I could never draw something like this from straight out of my head.

Any artist will tell you the best way to improve is practice. I wholeheartedly agree: practice helps a TON. But some forms of practice are better than others. For example, if you draw the exact same type of eye over and over again, are you really getting better? Probably not! You typically grow the most when you decide to experiment with your style. So don't be afraid to try something new, even if it ends up looking really ugly. Nobody has to see it, anyway. And sometimes you discover awesome new techniques.

When you get better at realism, you also get better at anime. At least, that's what I find when I occasionally try to draw anime again.

DeviantART has a lot of tutorials that can teach you new tips and tricks. If you haven't already, you can +watch or join tutorial groups like #Divine-Tutorials, #Tutorial-City, #Drawing-Tutorials and others to get a bunch of them in your inbox. (Here are some ones that really help me.) =Fyuvix in particular has a gallery that's worth stalking; her tutorials are GREAT.

Have patience, and don't give up! Learning realism takes a really long time. It took me five or six years of lots of practice to get from about where you are to where I am now. Here's my improvement meme, if it inspires or comforts you. You usually can't see your improvement until you look back at things you drew at least six months ago. It can be really frustrating, but if you don't give up, I know you can do it.

Another question that happened to pop up was when you said tracing the image. I'm more on the side of traditional art for realism (I prefer it over digital even if almost 90% of my deviations are digital) so could you possibly re-explain the arrow of your first bullet?

I'm sorry for asking even more, I really appreciate all the information you've given me.
